BRENT STOLLER

A hopeful, (sometimes) humorous take on the traumas of infertility and pregnancy loss.

IVF 5: How Many Viable Embryos Did This Round Produce?

Hopped up on 43 hormone injections, Emily went through an egg retrieval that produced 17 mature eggs.

The next day, we found out 15 of those eggs had been successfully fertilized, and we breathed a sigh of relief.

After a tense week of waiting, we learned that seven of the 15 had survived — our highest percentage and highest overall total ever — and would be sent off for genetic testing. We said our prayers and expressed our gratitude. At the risk of looking like a lunatic, I turned to our lost, unborn children for a little extra help.

And then we got to the hard part of this process.

The reason we’re doing IVF is because, following Emily’s second miscarriage in March 2017, we learned that she had been born with a chromosomal condition that compromised an estimated 80-90% of her eggs.

This means that even though we’ve had great preliminary results at every step of this latest round, there’s been no guarantee we’d end up with anything to show for it.

So…how many viable embryos did IVF 5 produce?
