IVF 5: How Many of Our Embryos are Still Kicking?

Another week, another set of (preliminary) results, another reaction video.

A reminder of where we stand in this fifth round of IVF:

Last week, Emily’s eggs were retrieved and underwent the fertilization process.

Of the 17 mature eggs that were collected, 15 of them were successfully fertilized and became embryos.

Those 15 embryos have been monitored over the last week. The ones that survived will now be tested to determine if they have the proper chromosomes or not.

When we started IVF in spring 2017, we were told the average embryo survival rate in this first week following fertilization is around 50%. But we have never come close to that.

OUR STATS:

  • Round 1: 6 out of 16 embryos survived the week (37.5%)
  • Round 2: 2 out of 10 embryos survived the week (20%)
  • Round 3: 6 out of 16 embryos survived the week (37.5%)
  • Round 4: 2 out of 6 embryos survived the week (33%)

We’ve never eclipsed 37.5%, nor have we ever had more than six embryos go through chromosomal testing.

These stats shaped our expectations for this second wave of results, and they hopefully provide the proper context for what you see in the video below.

So…how many of our 15 embryos are still kicking? Find out here:
